Bridge is a renowned partnership trick-taking card game that involves four players arranged in two teams, with partners seated opposite each other. Utilizing a standard 52-card deck, the game begins with both teams at zero points, aiming to determine the winner of the best two out of three games. Each game concludes when a player reaches 100 points, ahead of their opponent.
Scoring is primarily achieved through bidding and winning tricks, referred to as "books." The scoring breakdown for successful contracts varies based on the trump suit: if trumps are Clubs or Diamonds, each trick beyond six is worth 20 points; Hearts or Spades yield 30 points per trick; and if there are no trumps, the first trick scores 40 points, with subsequent tricks worth 30 points each.
An additional option exists for a shorter format, concluding when a team reaches 100 points to win a single game.
The game initiates with an auction led by the dealer, with play continuing in a clockwise direction. During their turn, players may:
- Make a bid that exceeds any previous bid,
- Say "double" if the most recent bid was made by an opponent and has not already been doubled,
- Say "redouble" in response to a previous bid from their own side that has been doubled by an opponent but not yet redoubled,
- Pass by stating "no bid" or "pass," indicating they choose not to engage in the current bidding round while retaining the option to bid later.
It is advisable for players to consistently use one term for passing. If all four players pass during their first turn, the hand is considered "passed out," leading to a redeal by the next dealer.
If bidding occurs, it continues until three consecutive passes occur, at which point the last bid establishes the contract. The team that made this final bid attempts to fulfill it, with the first player mentioning the denomination designated as the declarer, while their partner is termed the dummy. Overtricks accumulate 100 points each and undertricks yield 50 points; however, these do not influence the game's ultimate outcome.
In standard gameplay, victory is granted to the team winning two out of three games. In quick gameplay, the first team to reach 100 points is declared the winner.
